Sinus Problems

Sinuses are air spaces between bones and face and mucus drains through these spaces and out of the nose. There are four sinuses, in the cheekbones, between the eye sockets, in the forehead and above the eyebrows, deep in the head at the back of the nose.

Each of these sinuses has a channel that leads to the nose, these are narrow and can get blocked by mucous and become swollen. mucous memebrane is one of the bodies front- line defense mechanism.

It releases chemicals that can kill microorganisms, there are chances for mucous to get infected by these organism, this can infect the sinuses and the narrow channels. A simple cold will lead to sinusitis if the defense mechanism get compromised .

Sinusitis is the swelling of the inner lining of sinuses. This blocks the sinuses through which mucus drains into the nose, the pressure of the blocked fluid inside the sinus makes it painful.

According to ayurveda this condition occur due to the blockage of channels by kapha dosha, this blockage will lead to vatakopa and results in severe pain and breathing difficulty.

In ayurevda treatment shodana is the treatment modality which will remove the causative factor of the disease, in this case the nasal blockage is the main factor which leads to infection and inflammation.

Ayurveda panchakarma procedure nasyam (erhine therapy) or nasal medication, which uses specific medicines derived from individual herbs which are anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial in action clears the narrow channels and cleans up the sinuses.

Along with nasal medication special heat modalities which liquefies the hard mucous and opens the nasal channels are effective in sinusitis.
