Spinal disc herniation is a condition affecting the spine in which there is a Tear in the outer fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc which allows the soft central portion to bulge.
Symptoms of a herniated disc can vary depending on the location of the herniation and the types of soft tissue that become involved

Signs and symptoms.

  • little or no pain if the disc is the only tissue injured,
  • pain that will radiate into the regions served by affected nerve roots that are irritated or impinged by the herniated material.
  • undefined pains in the thighs, knees or feet.
  • numbness, tingling, muscular weakness, paralysis, and affection of reflexes
  • If the herniated disc is in the lumbar region the patient may also experience, pain usually continuous or at least is continuous in a specific position of the body.

CAUSES

  • Disc herniations can result from general wear and tear, such as when performing jobs that require constant sitting.
  • herniations can result from jobs that require lifting.
  • Traumatic injury to lumbar discs commonly occurs when lifting and benting at the waist,

Lumbago-Sciatica

SCIATICA AND DISC PROLAPSE Sciatica is a pain in the leg caused by compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that are branches of the sciatic nerve. The pain is felt in the lower back,

buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot. In addition to pain, there may be numbness, muscular weakness, and difficulty in moving or controlling the leg. Typically, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body.

Causes of sciatica Sciatica is generally caused by the compression of a lumbar spine nerve root L4 or L5 or sacral nerve roots S1, S2 or S3, or far less commonly, by compression of the sciatic nerve itself. Sciatica may also be experienced in late pregnancy, primarily resulting from the uterus pressing on the sciatic nerve, and, secondarily, from the muscular tension and/or vertebral compression consequent to carrying the extra weight of the fetus, and the postural changes inherent to pregnancy.

Ayurveda Disc Prolapse and Sciatica

In ayurveda the conditions which can result in backpain include external  traumatic factors (abhighataja), and internal (nija)

Lower back (kadi) is a vata specific site, at the same time joints are site of sleshaka sleshma(kapha), due to the causes(nidanas) vatha aggravation occur in kapha sthana.

And due to the increased ruksha guna(quality of dryness, leading to reduction in water content resulting in prolapse and inturn nerve irritation. The aim of the treatment is to reduce the dryness and bring back the sneha guna, elasticity and to rehydrate the disc, removing the osteophytes also called the mala roopa kapha.the treatment will be mainly vataharam and kaphaharam in initial stages and brmhanam in later stages to nourish the disc.

Setting the bone alignment. The herniated disc can be restored into its orginal position
